![]() ![]() Beitel won four races to advance to the championship round. There were 150 participants in her division seven countries competed in the soap box derby and around two-thirds of the competitors got eliminated after the first race. We thought she had third place until the last second, said her mother, Myra Beitel. The result came as a surprise to the Beitels. I was behind the kids going down the hill. When I did find out I couldnt say anything, Beitel said. Beitel will now compete in the Masters Division. In the Super Stock Division (age 10-17) the weight cant be more than 230 pounds, and the weight cant be more than 255 pounds in the Masters Division (age 10-17). The weight of the racer and car cant surpass 200 pounds. The Stock Division is for participants between the age of 8-14. There are three divisions in Soap Box Derby racing: Stock, Super Stock and Masters. In Tennessee there are four qualifying races: Tullahoma, Athens, Chattanooga and Cookeville. ![]() To qualify for the world championships Beitel won the Super Stock Division in a qualifying race in Tullahoma in June. Beitel is the first winner from Region 12, which consists of Tennessee, North Carolina and Kentucky. Tullahoma native Perrin Norris won the world title in the Stock Division in 2004. Shes only the second Tennessee resident in the races history shes the first girl racer in state history to win a world title. She trailed the other finalists Maddison Stapleton and Joe Puntel before a late burst propelled her to victory and a world title in the 71st championships with a time of 29.61 seconds on the 989-foot track. The seventh-grader at Siegel Middle School was one of the three finalists for the world title in the Super Stock Division of the 2008 Soap Box Derby World Championships in Akron, Ohio on July 26. It all came down to one race for Murfreesboro resident Hayley Beitel. ![]()
